Concrete Pillar Entry & Paver Driveway — Studio City Residence
- Scope
- Fency Builders Inc constructed a pair of freestanding cast-concrete entry pillars flanking the driveway opening at a flat Studio City lot. Between and beyond the pillars, the full driveway surface was paved with interlocking concrete pavers running from the public sidewalk to the front of the structure. The project transitions directly at the sidewalk edge, integrating the new paved surface with the existing public concrete.
- Materials
- Visible materials include board-formed or smooth cast-in-place concrete for the pillars, rectangular interlocking concrete pavers in a blended gray tone laid in a running-bond field pattern with a contrasting darker charcoal soldier-course border, and stacked surplus paver units visible at the base of the right pillar.
- Site challenge
- The driveway corridor is tightly bounded by the structure on the left and a dense hedgerow on the right, leaving limited tolerance for alignment of the pillar footings relative to the paved surface. Transitioning cleanly from the existing public sidewalk slab to the new paver field without lip or grade break required precise base preparation across the full width of the opening.
- How we solved it
- The pillars were set plumb and square to each other, establishing a defined entry portal that anchors the border geometry of the paver field. The soldier-course border pavers are cut and laid flush along both the sidewalk edge and the pillar bases, maintaining a continuous plane from street to structure. The paver field itself shows consistent joint spacing and an even surface, indicating a compacted aggregate base and proper screeded bedding sand beneath.
- Result
- The finished driveway presents a clean, level paved surface with a well-defined border detail that reads clearly from the street. The two concrete pillars establish a formal entry condition consistent with the existing architectural character of the green-clad residence and its brick front steps. Applicable City of Los Angeles zoning and driveway approach requirements should be confirmed with the relevant municipal department.
