The surface decides the system
Stucco, wood, metal and trim do not take one universal paint. Each gets the primer and finish that bonds to it.
Repairs before color
Cracks, failed caulk, peeling edges, bare wood and rust are fixed first. A water problem is named and solved, not painted over.
Color, sheen and protection
Color, sheen, masking, plants, windows and fixtures are planned before the first coat.

How do you prepare stucco before painting?
Clean it, open and fill cracks, let repairs cure, and prime where the surface needs it. Our stucco paint guide explains each step.
Can you paint cedar shingles?
Yes. Shingles get cleaned and scraped, loose or split ones replaced, and a primer and finish made for wood. The project above shows one we did.
Do you paint gates and fences too?
Yes. Metal gets rust treatment and a metal primer; wood gets a finish made for exterior wood.
Can you paint over cracked stucco?
Not successfully. Hairline cracks are repaired with an appropriate elastomeric or patching product, and larger or structural cracks need investigation before repair — a crack that is moving will reopen through any coating. Painting over the crack hides it until the next season.
What is elastomeric coating and do I need it?
Elastomeric is a thick, flexible coating that bridges hairline cracks and is common on stucco. It is a good tool in the right situation, but it is not a cure-all: it is heavier, it must be applied at the correct thickness, and applied over a damp or poorly prepared wall it can trap moisture. It should be a considered choice, not a default.
Should I paint before or after other exterior work?
After. Roofing, stucco repair, carpentry, fence and railing installation all create damage or dust that a fresh finish will not survive. Paint is the last exterior trade for a reason, with only final touch-up after everything else is complete.
