Steel Fence & Multi-Gate System — Porter Ranch Hillside Residence
Completed January 2024- Scope
- Fency Builders Inc installed a powder-coated steel fence and gate system securing the side yards and courtyard passages of a hillside residence in Porter Ranch. The work includes a vertical-picket driveway-side panel running house-to-wall, a matching pedestrian swing gate at the side-yard entry, a decorative wrought-iron-style double gate with perforated steel mesh infill and scroll ironwork top rail, and a horizontal-slat steel gate panel set between the house and a cut-stone column. Each gate and fence section connects to existing masonry block or natural-cut-stone columns already on site.
- Materials
- All fence and gate components are welded steel with a gloss black powder-coat finish; infill types include flat vertical pickets, perforated steel mesh panels, decorative cast-steel scroll elements, and horizontal flat-bar slats; support posts anchor into existing tan split-face CMU block columns and natural-cut-stone columns.
- Site challenge
- The site sits on a graded hillside pad with a steeply rising engineered slope immediately behind the rear yard, as visible in the fourth photograph, placing the fence line at the base of that slope where differential settlement and wind funneling between structures are persistent concerns. The narrow side-yard passages between the house faces and property-line walls further concentrate seasonal wind loads on any gate or panel installed in those corridors.
- How we solved it
- All steel members are welded to a continuous perimeter frame, and each gate is hung with heavy-duty barrel hinges fastened directly into the masonry columns, eliminating wood-post rot risk in a high-wind, Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone setting. The perforated mesh infill on the double gate and open-picket construction on the remaining panels reduce wind-load surface area while maintaining sight lines and defensible-space compliance considerations that should be confirmed with the City of Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety under its VHFHSZ requirements. The horizontal-slat panel at the rear passage is anchored to a steel post set into a concrete collar visible at grade, providing independent structural support independent of the adjacent stucco wall.
- Result
- The completed system presents a consistent gloss-black steel profile across all four fence and gate locations, tying together masonry columns of differing stone types into a unified enclosure. Construction details visible in the photographs — welded frames, heavy hinge hardware, and concrete-set posts — show a build suited to the lateral load demands of this Porter Ranch hillside site.
