What decides the job.
Freestanding or retaining
A wall that holds back soil is a different structure, with drainage behind it and often a permit. Our guide explains the difference.
Gate loads
A gate pulls on its pillars every time it opens. The pillar, its footing and its steel are sized for the gate you choose.
Grade, caps and finish
Steps in the grade, the cap, the stucco or paint, and the meeting point with fences and paving are planned as one wall.

What people ask us.
Do I need a permit for a block wall?
Often, depending on height, whether it retains soil, and the city. Retaining walls and taller freestanding walls usually need one. We check it for your property.
What is the difference between a retaining wall and a block wall?
A block wall stands on its own and mostly resists wind. A retaining wall holds back soil and water, so it needs more steel, a bigger footing and drainage behind it. Our guide compares the two.
Can you put a fence on my existing block wall?
Sometimes. It depends on the wall’s footing and steel. An older wall may not have been built for the wind load of a tall fence on top.
